MEANINGLESS

Jon Brion, 2001

IDEA | ALBUM

You know Jon Brion’s music when you hear it, but you also don’t. He has composed for an array of films such as Punch Drunk Love, Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind, I Heart Huckabees, Step Brothers, The Other Guys. He has produced music for artists like Fiona Apple, Mac Miller, Elliot Smith, Aimee Mann. And yet, this is Brion’s only album, released quietly in 2001 on his own website.

Brion’s DNA runs throughout the work of artists we often characterise as auteurs. He seems to be an artist whose true skill lies in the amplification of other people’s voices.

It seems oddly mysterious that his actual voice is so ever rarely heard, especially when it’s so defined.

That’s why this album is interesting. An album heard only if you were willing to dive into the depths of the internet. That is, until 2022, when suddenly it was published on Spotify. It’s an album of pure, unmediated Brion. An album he entitled Meaningless.
